Musspell – Hidden People (Song Review)

Musspell has created a song that’ll stop you in your stride with Hidden People. Artistic, experimental, and gloomy, it’s a work of expressive art. Let’s dissect the bones.

In essence, Hidden People is an electronic track. The synth work carries the same solemn underbelly as some of Depeche Mode’s darkest moments. With bell chimes, 80s synths, and disjointed, hypnotic drums, the track builds its haunting foundation.

The connection to the art lies in the vocals. Delicate, haunting, and perfectly atmospheric, they complete the perfect storm. What’s left is a track that feels like The Cure joined forces with Shakespears Sister to compose a Stranger Things soundtrack.

Some may call Hidden People Dream Pop—I get that. It’s dreamy and brimming with mesmerising melodies. Yet, the darkness it evokes is anything but a dream. Perhaps Musspell has created their own genre, and I’m going to coin it Shadow Gloom Pop.

When we tune into the radio, we’re often served twee music. But let’s be honest, the world is anything but twee. Musspell embraces their dark side, creating a genuine connection to the listener in the process.
