48 is the latest offering from Italian singer-songwriter The Fuzz, and it’s a gritty journey into his soul. So, where to start..? I’m sure you don’t need reminding of the famed Nirvana performance on MTV Unplugged. Now imagine Cobain performing that show while possessed by the Tom Waits back catalogue. Then, instead of the plush candlelit studio, picture it being recorded during a whiskey-fuelled session in the southwestern deserts of the USA. Yeah, 48 is that good!
The drums trudge in a way reminiscent of Dave Grohl’s in that MTV Unplugged performance. Guitars nonchalantly scoop in the distance. Harmonies whistle with an ethereal spirit. On top of the instrumentation, the hard-hitting lead vocal bellows. You feel the rawness and pain in every note. It’s a quality no Auto-Tune or expensive audio software can create.
In a world where production takes centre stage, 48 throws a two-finger salute to the industry norm of polished, processed tracks. You see, 48 is a live recording with production stripped back to its bare bones. Anything else, and 48 would lose its heart and soul.
48 is a reminder to every creative person, whatever the art form: for all the tech at our disposal, it boils down to human connection, and The Fuzz wears their emotion on their sleeve.
