It was 2002 when a well-known music magazine released a compilation CD called The New Rock Revolution. Garage rock and post-punk were at fever pitch. Punters flocked to live gigs and moshed to the sound of screaming guitars. That’s even with the soles of their Converse stuck to sticky beer-soaked venue floors.
For some of us, 2002 seems like yesterday, but the kick to the head comes when you realise it was over two decades ago. So, when a band comes along that takes you back to The New Rock Revolution, it’s as equally nostalgic as it is fresh and exciting. The Dazed Minded track Oh Boy is a wondrous 3 minutes, 37 seconds of anthemic post-punk garage rock, worthy of standing next to the spearheads of the last garage revolution.
The stick count-in leading to the Strokes-like drums instantly proves that Farm Road Studios and mixing engineer Spencer Withey have captured the essence of the band. The guitars stand strong with a well-considered gritty warm overdrive akin to Fell In Love With a Girl by the White Stripes. Throughout playful, melodic, vocal lines adorn Oh Boy, helping create a track somewhere between The Von Bondies, Skegss, and Courtney Barnett. It’s highly infectious!
Oh Boy sounds like a band on the rise. Perhaps 2002 wasn’t that long ago after all. Even better, maybe The Dazed Minded are front-and centre of the Brand New Rock Revolution, and I’m here for it.
