Think of 90s music, and you’ll probably think of Britpop or maybe Grunge, but let’s not forget it was also a fruitful period for pop. Australian singer-songwriter Kristin Venae’s latest single, Still Here, is steeped in 90s pop nostalgia. The chorus-soaked guitar intro has the same sparkling qualities as Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer. We’re not there long, though, as a Mary J. Blige-esque beat joins a choppy jazz-funk guitar line straight out of the Nile Rodgers playbook.
Over this sits Venae’s vocals. There’s a warmth and intimacy to her delivery as she channels Whitney influences. When the pre-chorus grips and the chorus soars, it becomes clear that this song could easily sit within Celine Dion’s catalogue. Considering Celine was one of the best selling artists in the 90s, it’s safe to say there’s an audience for Kristin Venae out there right now!
As the 90s come back into fashion, it doesn’t all have to be about baggy clothing and Friends marathons. If you’re craving a fresh take on the soulful pop that once dominated the airwaves, you’ll want to check out Still Here by Kristin Venae!
