“Chewing Gum” is the new single from Aussie rockers Amyl and The Sniffers. Fasten your seatbelts—this latest offering is a punk-laden anthem brimming with attitude. What else would you expect? In a world where toeing the line is the norm, Amyl and The Sniffers are a deep breath of pure, nicotine-infused, fresh(ish) air.
But there’s more to this band than just a “don’t-give-a-fuck” attitude. They have the tunes to back it up. The opening swirls of feedback in “Chewing Gum” quickly flow into the first verse, driven by a Stooges-esque guitar run and rhythm section.
“I was trialling through fire, but nevermore. I left with burns, but I left with nothing more,” Taylor sings with forthright nonchalance. The chorus hits with a clever play on words: “But just for once, and just for love, I’m stuck on you, just like a chewing gum!” The melody sticks in your mind, just like a rather sticky, ironic piece of chewing gum.
“Chewing Gum” is an anthem to wake you from your slumber. If your Bikini Kill LP is skipping and you’re bemoaning the death of the punk ethos, it’s time to take notice of Amyl and The Sniffers. With a back catalogue waiting, this band is a ticking time bomb.
The original punk movement was born out of working-class oppression. Today, our lives are wrapped in tech. Times have changed, but with AI at every turn, we’re searching for something real, something removed from the oppression of modern-day life. We need that punk anger and philosophy now more than ever.
While Amyl and The Sniffers don’t reinvent the wheel, they don’t need to. What they do hasn’t been executed with such attitude and musicianship for decades.
“Chewing Gum” features on their third album, Cartoon Darkness, which is out on October 25th, 2024. Find all pre-order info here. Listen to “Chewing Gum” now on the YouTube link below.
